📖 Rotation Rules & Groups

Plants in the same group shouldn't follow each other. Use these rules to prevent disease buildup and soil depletion.

🍅 Nightshades Solanaceae

Tomato, pepper, eggplant, potato, tomatillo, goji. Never follow nightshades with nightshades — diseases like blight and wilt persist in soil. Follow with legumes or brassicas.

ðŸĨĶ Brassicas Brassicaceae

Broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radish, turnip. Heavy feeders that deplete nitrogen. Follow with legumes to replenish soil.

ðŸŦ˜ Legumes Fabaceae

Beans, peas, lentils, clover, alfalfa. These are nitrogen fixers — they add nitrogen to soil! Follow with heavy feeders like brassicas or nightshades for best results.

ðŸĨ• Roots Allium/Apiaceae

Carrot, beet, onion, garlic, leek, parsnip, radish. Light to moderate feeders. Follow with leafy crops or legumes. Avoid following roots with roots to prevent pest buildup.

ðŸĨ’ Cucurbits Cucurbitaceae

Cucumber, squash, melon, pumpkin, zucchini. Heavy feeders, especially of potassium. Follow with legumes or roots. Avoid following cucurbits with cucurbits (powdery mildew risk).

ðŸĨŽ Leafy Greens Various

Lettuce, spinach, chard. Light to moderate feeders that benefit from nitrogen-rich soil. Great to follow legumes. Can follow most groups.

Ideal Rotation Sequence

A classic 3-4 year rotation cycle:

YearPlant GroupWhy
Year 1LegumesBuild nitrogen in soil
Year 2Brassicas / NightshadesUse the nitrogen left by legumes
Year 3Roots / AlliumsBreak pest cycles; lighter feeders
Year 4Cucurbits / LeafyFinish cycle; then restart with legumes
